The harpies are depicted as birds with human heads who feast on the trees where the souls who committed suicide are encased.  This is the punishment of those who commit this sin.  They are forbidden to have access to eternal life and their will not return to their bodies but rather they will return to their bodies instead they will be hanged in their branches.
