New Mexico was mostly Hispanic and culturally homogeneous.

Explanation:

Before the acquisition by USA, New mexico area was a newer settlement for the Mexican people taken over from the Spanish and now governed by the Mexicans. As the Mexicans settled the are it was mostly Hispanic by ethnicity.

This changed with the American takeover due to which the population of the ethnic groups dwindled and the white settlers began to cross over to the New Mexico to settle it.
