Constantinople was so important to the Ottoman Empire, because the capturing of it representing a major defeat for the forces of Christianity and triumph for Islam. It was also a gateway for trade between East and West. Due to the strategic position it was in, it was a meeting point for trade routes. Constantinople was the both the largest and richest city in all of Europe.
